Celebrating Spoodles

October 01, 2022

Did you know that October 11th is Spoodle Day? While we think all dogs are cute, the Spoodle is extra adorable. A mix between the Poodle and Cocker Spaniel, these guys look a lot like Teddy Bears. A local Pasadena, MD vet discusses the Spoodle in this article.

History

No one is sure exactly when the first Spoodle was born, but the ‘Doodle’ dogs started popping up in the 80’s. A man named Wally Conron mixed a Lab and a Poodle, hoping for a Lab with poodle fur. It’s pretty safe to say that he got that achievement unlocked!

Parentage

Fido has some traits from both of his parents. The Cocker Spaniel traces his origins back to the 16th century, and was originally renowned for hunting water fowl. The Poodle also has a long history: these pups started out as farming and guard dogs in the 15th century. However, by the 1800’s, the Poodle had decided to join the circus.

Basics

Spoodles are quite small, and are often considered a ‘designer dog’. They are very active, but don’t need a lot of room, so they are a popular choice for people in apartments. Fido is also very intelligent, and if trained properly, can be a very fun, loyal pet who is very eager to please his humans and just loves to cuddle. They are talkative, so prepare to have some conversations with your canine buddy.

Coat

One of Fido’s most prized features is his fur. Most spoodles have the thick, curly fur of the poodle. Why is that hairstyle so popular? For one thing, people with allergies tend to do much better with Spoodles than other dogs. This is because their thick curls capture dust and dander. Spoodles also don’t shed much, which is also a plus. You will need to brush your pooch at least once a week, and have him clipped regularly.

Other Doodles

We can’t really leave out Fido’s cousins. There are over 50 different doodle dogs! Or, to put it another way, there are oodles of doodles. While these lovable pooches are not recognized by official kennel clubs, they are out there, chasing squirrels and winning hearts. Some other doodles include the Golden Doodle, Labradoodle, Maltipoo, Saint Berdoodle, Schnoodles, and Yorkiepoos.
