Fido’s First Summer

July 01, 2022

Have you recently adopted a puppy? If so, it’s probably safe to say you’re in for some super cute moments. This adorable stage of your furry friend’s life isn’t all fun and games, though. This is the time to lay down the groundwork for your pet’s behavior and care, and help him grow into a happy, polite adult. Here, Pasadena, MD vet offers some tips on caring for a puppy in summer.

Heat

Heat can be hard on all of our canine friends, but it’s particularly tough on puppies. Little Fido can be in serious trouble if he overheats! Make sure he always has shade and water, and keep a close eye on him when it’s really hot.

Playtime

There are few things cuter than a playful puppy happily chasing his tail or running after a ball! Take a few minutes a day to play with your furry pal. This will help him burn off those zoomies. (It’s also adorable to watch.)

Socialization

Puppyhood is a crucial time for little Fido’s mental and emotional development. Your pooch needs to get used to visiting new places and interacting with new dogs and people. That socialization must be done while he’s still young, as it is key to helping him grow into a friendly adult dog. Host a puppy party, or just have people stop over for meet-greet-treat sessions.

Grooming

You’ll be doing both your future self and your puppy’s future self a big favor by getting him used to being bathed and having his paws and teeth handled now, while he’s little. Be sure to incorporate lots of treats and praise!

Training

Your canine companion has lots to learn over the next few months. Housetraining, crate training, and obedience training should all start immediately. Summer nights are perfect dog training time!

Veterinary Care

Your fuzzy buddy will need a few appointments in that first year. You’ll want to get spay/neuter surgery scheduled. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Cuddles

Dogs form incredibly strong bonds with their humans, but that relationship has to be nurtured. Spend lots of time with little Fido! Toys, teats, and playtime will all keep that tail going. Savor this special phase of your pet’s life: it will be over before you know it!
